YMCA names Karyn Lightcap interim CEO

Karyn Lightcap, chief financial officer for the nonprofit Somerset Valley YMCA, last week was named interim chief executive officer, providing leadership for the Y’s three branches located in Bridgewater, Hillsborough and Somerville, Andrea Thorne, board chair of the Somerset Valley YMCA has announced. Lightcap has been the Y’s chief financial officer for two years. YMCA hosts gymnastics meet

The Somerville Family YMCA, a branch of the Somerset Valley YMCA, hosted 50 gymnasts competing from Somerset Valley, Fanwood Scotch Plains and South Mountain YMCAs on Saturday, Feb. 9. It was the second-ever home meet held at this Y, with the first one held in February 2012. The meet was for entry-level competitors, but the Y is raising money for equipment, including a bigger spring floor that would allow it to host all levels of Y teams in the future. 300 ran around for 2nd annual Spooky Sprint

The second annual Somerville Family YMCA Spooky Sprint 5K walk/run, a benefit run held under bright sunny skies on Saturday, Oct. 13, drew twice as many runners as its inaugural run last year. They ranged in age from 8 to 84. Last year, the first inaugural run drew 150 participants. $2,200 grant helped kids at healthy camps

A partnership between the Somerville Family YMCA and the Somerville Municipal Alliance Committee allowed the Y to offer key programs this summer that taught children to stay healthy, well and safe. With the help of a $2,200 grant from the Alliance, the Somerville Y offered gymnastics camps focusing  not only on teaching gymnastic skills but also promoting a healthy body image. Somerset Valley YMCA divers make splash at national competitions

While the USA, Great Britain and China battled over who would win the gold in diving in the 2012 Summer Olympics, some young members of the Somerset Valley YMCA’s Lords of the Boards diving team captured a few medals of their own at national diving events this summer. Spooky Sprint 5K set for Oct. 13

The second annual Somerville Family YMCA  Spooky Sprint 5K walk/run, a benefit run set for Saturday, Oct. 13, will be a USA Track and Field certified event this year. Last year, the first inaugural run drew 150 participants.
