  Saturday\, October 6\, the J. Harper Smith Estate at 228 Altamont Place in
  Somerville is conducting a guided historical house tour as a benefit for t
 he Somerville Police.  The J. Harper Smith house is on both the New Jersey 
 egister of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places.</p
 >\n<p>The beautiful Queen Ann Eastlake Victorian home – complete with carri
 e house and fishpond – has ornate stonework\, griffins\, terra cotta tiles\
 cherubs\, elaborate wooden turnings\, and iron-crested slate roof. The inte
 rior features magnificent stained glass windows\, including authentic Tiffa
 ny Studio windows in the entrance hall\, along with mahogany\, cherry\, oak
  and walnut woodwork.  Eleven-foot first floor ceilings are graced by molde
  and carved plaster\, and the walls have lincrusta decoration. The library\
 , parlor and dining room floors are parquet\; the entrance hall floors are 
 marble.</p>\n<p>Famed Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer – whose work 
 cludes the Duke estate in Newport\, RI\, Duke University\, and Somerville’s
 wn St. John’s Episcopal Church – designed the French Renaissance-style libr
   Trumbauer had installed stain-glass windows and a built in-window seat th
 t is flanked by heavily carved columns.  Tapestries and mahogany cover the 
 ibrary’s walls.</p>\n<p>Admission: Adults $8 / Seniors and Children 12 &amp
  under: $5.  All proceeds will benefit the Somerville P.B.A.</p>\n<p>Music 
 ill be provided by Harpist Patricia Turse\, and there will be Door Prizes a
